Haslemere u3a has celebrated a landmark year after welcoming hundreds of new members and recognising the volunteers who have helped make the organisation one of the fastest-growing in the country.

Around 90 group leaders, organisers and volunteers gathered at the Hunter Centre on Friday, July 17, for the charity's annual thank-you party, celebrating the people behind its 70-plus interest and activity groups.

Chairman Roger Abayasekera praised volunteers for driving the organisation's success after membership grew from 783 to 925 in just 13 months – an increase of almost 20 per cent, placing Haslemere u3a among the UK's largest 10 per cent of u3a organisations.

Addressing guests, Roger said: "People join our u3a because of you and the wonderful activities you provide. Every new member represents someone whose life has been enriched by Haslemere u3a. This growth is a direct tribute to your hard work, commitment and enthusiasm."

The evening also recognised the long-standing contribution of Clare Fripp, who recently stepped down as Beacon Administrator after more than a decade of service. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers in recognition of her dedication behind the scenes.

"A huge thank you once again to all our Group Leaders, Organisers and Volunteers – you truly are the heart of Haslemere u3a," Roger added.

The organisation is now looking ahead to its annual Open Day at Haslemere Hall on Tuesday, August 18, from 10.30am to 12.30pm, where prospective members can meet group leaders and find out more about the wide range of activities on offer.

Open to retired and semi-retired people of all ages, Haslemere u3a offers more than 70 groups covering everything from arts and crafts to languages, walking and history. Annual membership costs £10, with sign-ups available online or at the event.
