Women’s health was given the spotlight at Holy Cross Hospital during Urology Week. The Europe-wide campaign highlights urological conditions and treatments and this year’s theme centred on incontinence – a widespread issue that affects many women and can be very distressing.
Physiotherapists Jenny and Jo from Holy Cross Hospital’s outpatients’ unit led the charge, hosting a live online conversation about incontinence. They covered stress incontinence, practical tips for managing symptoms, and the causes and treatments of urge incontinence, highlighting how women’s health physiotherapists can provide support.
Women’s health expert Jenny Deeming urged women to speak out. She said: “Don’t suffer in silence – there’s no need to be embarrassed. Whilst incontinence is not life threatening it does impact on quality of life. It’s a really common problem and is very treatable.
“The two conditions I see most frequently in women are stress incontinence which is when activities such as sneezing, laughing, and exercise cause a little leak of urine, and urge incontinence which is when you feel a sudden and very urgent need to get to the toilet.”
She explained that these issues often arise from weakened muscles, especially after childbirth.
“Our treatment plans are tailored to each person and may include pelvic floor muscle training or lifestyle adjustments. I encourage women to come forward and seek help in a supportive environment.”
