Badshot Lea manager Gavin Smith bemoaned his side’s sloppy start after they slipped to a 2-0 defeat against Hayes & Yeading United.

The visitors took the lead in the first minute through Adrian Clifton’s goal, and doubled their advantage on 21 minutes through George Sippetts.

The Baggies were playing against the wind in the first half, and Smith felt his side should have managed the conditions better.

“It was tough conditions but we didn't help ourselves,” said Smith.

“I felt the wind had a real impact on the game.

“In the first minute it's a good ball in and a good finish but from our point of view it's too easy.

“We've started with the kick-off and wanted too long on the ball.

“We told the lads not to play backwards, because if you play backwards you're going to put someone under pressure.

“We started sloppily.

“With the quality Hayes have got if you give them time to put a decent ball in they're going to do it, and if you don't mark your player properly he's going to finish it if he gets a chance.

“In terms of quality they have more quality than we have.

“We got four or five good opportunities without testing the goalkeeper, but we got in behind a few times.

“I did feel the second half would be just as hard for them to get out as it was for us in the first half with the wind.

“We needed to put some decent balls in from set pieces, but we couldn't do it.

“We need things to be perfect for us to score a goal.

“I don't see a lack of energy or desire, just a lack of quality at key times and not having much of a threat going forward.

“There is a lot of endeavour.”
