Aldershot Town manager Scott Davies praised his side’s character after they won 1-0 at home to FC Halifax Town.

Tristan Abrahams’ 27th-minute penalty was saved by Halifax keeper True Grant, but the Shots kept plugging away and got their reward when Marcus Wyllie scored in the 80th minute.

“I’m always happy after three points and a clean sheet,” said Davies.

“I thought when we missed the penalty it maybe wasn’t going to be our day, but the boys stuck to the task.

“They played the way we know how to play – on the front foot, aggressive, try to play quickly, and try to get balls in the box.

“Ultimately, three lads that have come on have combined to get us a really well-worked goal.

“We had to ride our luck at times – I thought Jonathan Macaulay made two outstanding saves after we missed the penalty.

”We’ve gone through a little bit of adversity but come out with the three points. It’s really pleasing.

“It shows character, belief and a willingness to carry on going.

“We’ve won in a fashion that is to be applauded because we could have gone into our shells and felt sorry for ourselves, but I don’t think we did.”

Substitutes Alfonso Tenconi-Gradillas, Brody Peart and Wyllie were all involved in Wyllie’s winner.

Davies was delighted with the impact the trio made, and believes his whole squad all have their part to play.

“I was really pleased for Marcus – he’s worked so hard and trained really well,” said Davies.

“Brody produced a great cross and Alfonso, on his debut, had a really cute set for the winger.

“We talk about starters and finishers and three lads that have come on have impacted the game and finished it off for us.

“It’s always going to be a group effort. It’s going to be a squad game with us, it’s never going to be about one individual or two people, it’s always going to be a collective.”

Davies gave a Shots debut to goalkeeper Jonathan Macaulay after he joined the club on loan from Watford with Nick Hayes unavailable for the Halifax match.

“Jonathan didn’t put a foot wrong,” said Davies.

“His performance was flawless – he made two really big saves.

“I’m delighted for him because going out as a loan goalie and playing a level you’ve not played at before can be quite daunting, but I thought he adapted to it really well.”
