Farnham Roller Hockey Club’s new girls’ team enjoyed an impressive debut in the Eastern Counties Roller Hockey Association under-15/under-17 female league.

The team’s opening match against Soham was a fast, end-to-end contest. Farnham struck the crossbar several times, while keeper Courtney Wheeler produced a string of excellent saves to keep the match level.

A blue card for Soham handed Farnham a two-minute power play, but despite sustained pressure they were unable to break the deadlock and the first half ended 0-0.

With nine minutes remaining, vice-captain Alba Devine’s shot forced a rebound that captain Lois Bradshaw reacted to brilliantly, guiding the ball into the net for the breakthrough.

Soham pushed for an equaliser, but Farnham held firm to win 1-0. The squad included two under-13 players, Annabel Page and Isabel Brito.

Farnham faced ECU in their second match. ECU took the lead eight minutes in, but Farnham stayed composed. The first half closed with ECU 1-0 up.

Farnham equalised early in the second half when Devine’s shot took a deflection, allowing Bradshaw to react quickly and score.

With seven minutes remaining, Bradshaw struck again, capitalising on a loose ball, sprinting the length of the rink and flicking it past the goalkeeper for a superb solo goal.

Wheeler produced a series of crucial saves as Farnham held on to secure a 2-1 victory.

Farnham coach Scott Wheeler said: “The game against Soham was a fairly even game which could have gone either way. Lois’ sharp reaction to finish from the rebound was all that split the teams.

“Against ECU, we knew they would dominate possession so we would need to defend deep and try to take our chances when they came.

“The girls stuck to the plan the whole game and didn’t switch off. They should all be proud of their effort and teamwork to earn two fantastic results.”
