Clanfield’s first team beat Portsmouth’s fourth team by 49 runs in Division Five South East of the Hampshire Cricket League on Saturday.

Clanfield made a good start with openers Alex Andrews and Matt Bradley scoring 50 before the latter was dismissed.

Number three Thomas Wright was in the runs again, scoring an impressive 68 – his third half-century of the season. With opener Andrews contributing 42 and Tommy Hughes 43, Clanfield had reached 187 by the 28th over.

A solid partnership between Adam Smith (33) and James MacGregor (22) continued the momentum as Clanfield finished on 264 for six.

Portsmouth started their innings on the back foot, scoring just 43 runs in the first ten overs. Nick Sawyer made the breakthrough and wickets fell regularly.

Richard Rigby staged a defiant fightback with 42 and Kunal Singh Chouhan scored a rapid half-century, but both were dismissed by Clanfield captain Sean Swift, who wrapped the game up with three for 43.

Clanfield’s second team fell to a 94-run defeat at Bedhampton Mariners’ second team in Division Six South East of the Hampshire Cricket League on Saturday.

Bedhampton’s Paul O’Leary and Steve Rudder made light of any loose balls to push the score along until Simon Walton took an excellent catch at mid-wicket off first-change bowler Rob Page (one for 30) to dismiss Rudder with the score on 57.

The arrival of captain Gary Hounsome (107 not out) saw the high run rate continue until O’Leary was bowled by Roy Goulding for 66 with the score at 169. While Sanj Patnaik went cheaply six runs later, Aaron Saunders (14 not out) provided excellent support to Hounsome as Bedhampton finished on 229 for three.

Clanfield lost an early wicket when Page fell in the fourth over. Alex Graham scored a fluid 38 before he was stumped, and Sudip Sen’s (19) careful innings came to an end shortly afterwards. Kris Lane scored a rapid 24 before he was dismissed by Rudder (three for 21) as Clanfield finished on 135 for six.

Clanfield’s second team will host Portchester’s first team on Saturday.
