Halima Cassell, one of Britain’s leading contemporary sculptors, launched her first solo exhibition at the Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village (wattsgallery.org.uk) on Tuesday, running until June 18.
The exhibition, entitled Halima Cassell: From the Earth, showcases the artist’s career over the past 25 years and brings together new work inspired by the gallery’s founding artists, George Frederic Watts and Mary Watts. Cassell’s fusion of cultural environments informs her practice, exploring the connection between people through her use of unglazed ceramic, marble, wood and more.
The exhibition opens with a commission, the first acquisition by a living artist to join the Watts Gallery Trust collection, and includes work created throughout Cassell’s career, as well as pieces inspired by her time spent as artist in residence in Japan, Pakistan and Italy.
The exhibition is a must-see for anyone interested in contemporary sculpture and art inspired by nature and diverse cultural influences.
