The Arts Society Haslemere’s next lecture will explore the evolution of one of the world’s great cultural institutions — the National Gallery — through ten of its most iconic paintings.
Taking place at Haslemere Hall on Tuesday, April 22 at 2pm, the talk will be delivered by Dr Jonathan Conlin, a leading historian of British cultural life and the authorised historian of the National Gallery.
Founded in 1824, the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square boasts a collection that spans centuries, with works by Van Eyck, Botticelli, Constable and Van Gogh. But unlike many great galleries, it wasn’t born from a royal collection — it was created by Parliament for the public.
Dr Conlin’s will follow the how the gallery’s collection reflects changing ideas of public service, taste and accessibility.
