The Hanger Freehouse in Oakhanger has won two prestigious hospitality awards in as many months.
After being crowned ‘Best Contemporary Dining Experience’ with Lux Lifestyle Magazine’s National Bar and Restaurant Awards in May, the pub was also named ‘Best Destination Pub’ in the Hampshire & Isle of Wight – Muddy Stilettos 2023 In Love with locals Award in June.
The latter was judged on customer nominations, with The Hanger Freehouse now going on to compete for the National Muddy Awards.
It comes as Francis and Clare Joyce celebrate their first year as owners of the village pub.
Clare said: “This is a huge boost for us as an independent, and a wonderful way to get our name out into Hampshire and surrounding counties. A massive thank you to everyone that voted, and to our locals and regulars who have been a brilliant support in our first year.
“It’s also been fantastic for the whole team who have worked so hard to help get us to this point. We have a lot more planned for the future here at The Hanger and can’t wait to get started.”
The Hanger is thought to date back as far as 1550 and was previously known as The Red Lion & The Rising Sun Inn.
It has a focus on seasonal, Hampshire-based produce and serves a selection of Hampshire ales – with Clare and Francis aiming to create a “destination dining reputation” while also bringing the historic pub back into the center of the community.
They both have more than 20 years’ experience in hospitality across London, Bath and Hampshire, including The Thomas Lord in West Meon and The Bath Pub Company.
