Tilford Bach Festival is a joyful annual reunion of musicians and music lovers at a little village church to enjoy top-quality Baroque music.
Directed by violinist Adrian Butterfield, four concerts celebrated the tercentenary of Bach’s arrival in Leipzig.
Friday’s concert included a virtuoso flute concerto by Bach’s son Emanuel, performed by Rachel Brown, and Handel’s delightful and witty organ concerto The Cuckoo and the Nightingale, with Silas Wollston as soloist.
On Saturday The Royal College of Music Baroque Ensemble performed concerti by Telemann and Graupner, and later in the day Trios For Two gave Adrian the opportunity to include a piece by Jean-Marie Leclair, a French composer whose complete violin works he is recording. It was good to hear the harpsichord as a solo instrument in Handel’s Suite in F Major, brilliantly performed by Silas Wollston.
The final concert brought together the London Handel Orchestra plus drums, trumpets and five singers for an outstanding performance of Bach’s Magnificat, with Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring for an encore.
