A Petersfield charity has raised more than £5,000 through a memorial quiz.
The charity Maddy’s Mark hosted the event at Churcher’s College, which was attended by more than 250 people. In the two years since it was founded, the charity has been able to bring more than 2,000 girls and young women into rugby.
The charity was established in memory of Maddy Lawrence, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 20 following an injury sustained while playing for her university rugby team. Despite her courageous battle in hospital, Maddy succumbed to sepsis two weeks after the injury.
Maddy’s parents, Karen and Simon Lawrence, said: “We want to reach many more girls and women. Promoting physical and mental health to as many as we can at a time when the importance and need for both has never been more urgently felt.
“With your help we can do this. We were so grateful to all the new supporters and a special thanks to those who were generous enough to support Maddy’s Mark for a second year.”
Maddy found that rugby, with its inclusivity and team spirit, not only provided challenge and fitness, but also helped to build self-esteem, long-lasting friendships and a sense of belonging.
The raffle prizes were donated by businesses from Petersfield and the surrounding areas. Every table had a list of prizes and the name and description of each business. Flyers were displayed and business cards provided, with the message to support local businesses.
