Marks & Spencer has confirmed that its Simply Food store in Alton will close in January 2027, dealing another blow to the town's High Street.

The retailer said the closure would coincide with the end of its lease, although an exact closing date has not been announced.

The news follows the recent announcement concerning TJ Jones and the Post Office.

East Hampshire MP Damian Hinds described the closure as “very sad news” and said he had contacted M&S to request a meeting.

He said: "This is very sad news for the town, especially coming so soon after the news about TJ Jones and the Post Office, and my thoughts are particularly with the staff who work there.

"I very much hope that alternative local employment can be found for everyone affected."

Mr Hinds said he was also speaking with East Hampshire District Council about the future of the site and how it might be repurposed.

He added: "M&S has played an important role as an anchor store at the end of Alton High Street, so its closure will be a real blow to the town centre.

"I will be doing all I can to understand what has led to this decision and to help ensure the site continues to play a positive role in Alton's future."

Simon Cherry, regional manager at M&S, confirmed the closure and thanked customers and staff for their support.

He said: "Our Alton Simply Food store will close next January, in line with the end of our lease. I'd like to say a massive thank you to our customers who have shopped with us over the years and to our amazing store team."

Mr Cherry said the retailer was reshaping its food business to focus on stores offering the full M&S Food range.

The announcement follows the closure of M&S Simply Food in Fleet in August, after nearly 15 years.

Meanwhile, the retailer opened a new large Foodhall at Farnham Retail Park in March.

Customers in Alton will continue to be served by M&S stores in Petersfield, Farnham and Basingstoke.
