Barclays has revealed more details of Farnham's proposed 'deposit service' – as well as plans for a new Barclays Local cashless banking site.
Cash machine operator LINK has ruled out a new shared 'banking hub' in Farnham, despite the town being left with just two high street bank branches after Barclays' closure in early-2024.
But LINK has assessed a need for a new 'deposit service', delaying the Barclays closure originally pencilled in for February 21 until this is delivered.
According to a Barclays spokesperson, it is too early to confirm specific details of the deposit service but "for example, it could be an ATM or enhancements to the local Post Office facilities".
Deposit services were rolled out at the same time as banking hubs in January 2023 to provide consumers and businesses with convenient and accessible ways to deposit cash without having to visit a bank branch.
Like banking hubs these services are operated by Cash Access UK Ltd, a bank-owned delivery company.
The Barclays spokesperson continued: "In addition, following the branch closure, we plan to open a Barclays Local in Farnham, a cashless banking site where customers can meet a colleague face-to-face for banking support, as they would in a branch and without the need to travel.
"We are currently working with the local community to identify a suitable location and will again let our customers know more details when finalised."
The Herald is unsure who in the local community Barclays is working with, but Haslemere Town Council was heavily involved in finding a location for Haslemere's new banking hub.
Barclays recently announced the imminent closure of its Farnham branch citing changing customer habits towards internet and telephone banking.
It has promised to inform customers once a new planned closure date is confirmed.
