A woman living with over 40 allergies can finally enjoy eating hot crossed buns thanks to life-changing injections - just in time for Easter.

Chloe Ramsay, 20, was born with lots food allergies - including water - and was at risk of having anaphylaxis if she ate certain foods including potatoes and bananas.

She was diagnosed with 'pollen food syndrome' - an allergy to any pollen-derived substances - including sweets, fruits, and even perfumes in June 2023.

While she no longer ends up hospitalised from allergic reactions thanks to treatments in childhood, she currently has a list of 40 things that can cause her mouth and throat to swell up dangerously, or bring her skin up in hives. They include kiwis, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and grapes.

Other foods that cause her mouth and throat to swell-up dangerously include tomatoes, raisins, kiwis, strawberries and blueberries.

At just six months old, Chloe had her first allergic reaction when she turned blue from eating potatoes - a frightening moment that eventually led to her diagnosis.

As well as particular foods, Chloe has had to avoid perfumes, scented soap and even contact with water which can cause her skin to flare-up with hives - known as aquagenic urticaria - a condition unrelated to her pollen food syndrome.

In 2024, she was introduced to a monthly injection that can help alleviate her symptoms.

The 'black box' injection needed medical board approval because of it's strength, but Chloe's severe condition meant she qualified.

The jabs mean Chloe is able to enjoy foods that once caused an allergic reaction - like raisins - so hot-crossed buns are back on the menu.

Chloe, a criminology with sign language student, from Liss, Hampshire, spoke to Sell Us Your Story: "We found out about my first allergies when I was six months old and my mum was weaning me.

"If I was given potatoes or bananas I would go blue and pass out, but luckily my reactions aren't that bad any more.

"Thanks to the injections, I can have hot cross buns this year, which I haven’t been able to have pretty much ever."

As a child, Chloe used to suffer from anaphylactic shocks after eating certain foods, which resulted in numerous trips to A&E.

Over years, the hospital used a 'microdosing' technique to train the body not to go into anaphylaxis and to reduce her severe reactions.

Some allergies faded away, while new ones emerged, and her reactions were "invasive" such as swelling lips, redness and a "scratchy" sensation when she breathes.

In October 2022, Chloe broke-out in hives when water touched her skin.

She diagnosed with aquagenic urticaria - an allergy to water on her skin - but luckily, drinking it caused no issues.

She said: "It can be itchy and painful, like having ants crawling on your skin.

"I felt like I wanted to scrape my skin off with a knife."

However due to the injections, Chloe has been able to re-introduce foods that once caused a reaction.

She is able to eat most fruits, with pineapple being her favourite discovery.

Chloe said: “People see me out and about biting into an apple, but they don’t know that is the first apple I have had in 10 years”.

Her injections are self-administered every four weeks and the course lasts six months, before she'll undergo an allergy review to see if the condition has been 'cured', before starting another course if it hasn't.

This means she may end up being prescribed courses of the jabs for the rest of her life.

Chloe claims patients using the injections are usually "cured" of their conditions between six month to a year.

Unfortunately, Chloe has been on the injections for two years and will need to continue them.

"Apparently I'm one of the unlucky three per cent that wasn't completely cured by it," she said.

"It's quite annoying, however, I would rather be on it than have all of the reactions."

Alongside her renewed tolerance to foods, Chloe can now shower and even step out into the rain without suffering painful rashes.

She said: “I am not scared to go outside when it is raining anymore.

“Before, I would be so scared of walking to the train station if it was raining because I knew it would hurt so bad."

Despite her ongoing struggles with her allergies, Chloe remains optimistic about her outlook on life.

She added: “My mum taught me what allergies were from the moment I could talk.

“I am very confident about it and I am not ashamed.

“If people don’t accept it then they are not going to be in my life, because this is a very big part of my life”.
