A PLAY area that’s putting the castle back into Rowlands Castle has been officially opened.

Spiderman didn’t need to cast a web to get youngsters to try out the £100,000 additions to the recreation ground’s play area.

Spidey senses were tingling long before Rowlands Castle Parish Council chairman Chris Stanley cut the ribbon.

The equipment is designed to create “an exciting, stimulating and inclusive environment” and includes climbing frames, swings, shelter and a family seating area.

The previous equipment was nearly 20 years old and showing signs of wear-and-tear, with the project being master-minded by the council’s facilities officer, Claire Newman, in consultation with fellow councillors, groups and residents.

The revamp was overseen by ESP Playparks while £35,000 and £20,000 came from developer funding and the district council, respectively.

County councillors also awarded the project a £1,000 grant with a further £500 coming from the Rowlands Castle Good Neighbours group.
