Edith Day (1884-1981) was a driving force behind many of Haslemere’s key developments in the early twentieth century. Following her father’s death in 1913, she oversaw the opening of Haslemere Hall, serving on its committee for nearly 50 years. Appalled at the Urban District Council’s decision not to pursue a local housing scheme, she joined the council in 1919, advocating for affordable housing and successfully championing the municipal housing scheme at High Lane.

She played a key role in Haslemere Tenants Ltd, helping fund 14 cottages on Midhurst Road. A committed National Trust supporter, she also remained deeply involved in Haslemere’s hospitals. During the Second World War, she offered her home as a reserve hospital. She was a true pillar for the town.
