A piece of Cowdray Park’s sporting history has fetched more than £15,000 after a prestigious polo trophy went under the hammer in Fernhurst.

The historic Cowdray Park Gold Cup (1956-1991) sold for £15,500 at John Nicholson’s Auctioneers. Handcrafted by Theo Fennell, the silver trophy bears the names of some of polo’s greatest champions.

Among those immortalised are Anthony Embiricos, who won the cup six times, Lord Vestey, a three-time winner, and the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who lifted the trophy in 1957, 1966 and 1969.

John Nicholson, auctioneer, said: “A trophy of this calibre is far more than silver and craftsmanship – it is a piece of sporting history.

“The Cowdray Park Polo Cup represents decades of elite competition, distinguished ownership and enduring prestige.”
