A booklet charting the history of Quakers in Alton has been compiled following last year’s exhibition to celebrate the 350th birthday of the Quaker Meeting House in Church Street.
The meeting house was created in 1672 when 67 Quakers living in the town clubbed together to build it on land already donated by Roger and Ann Gates. In 1658 their son Nicholas became the first Quaker born in Alton.
The booklet, produced with help from the Hampshire Cultural Trust, Jane Hurst and Dr Joe Osmond, builds on the exhibition. It costs £2 and can be bought at the meeting house on Friday or Sunday at 10.15am, or by visiting https://alton.quakermeeting.org/
