A local councillor is calling for unity as much-needed road safety works are left on a knife edge.

Last Friday at the Petersfield Strategy Group meeting, Petersfield county and district councillor Russell Oppenheimer outlined traffic calming measures for Sussex Road and Pulens Lane up to the Durford Road crossroads junction. 

But much to his surprise, doubts were expressed about plans to reduce traffic speed along the eastern end of Sussex Road from 40mph to 30mph (pictured).

Cllr Oppenheimer said: “I was stunned – I thought all the strategy group members were on the same page.

“The county council has very limited money for these type of projects and will allocate funds and time only when everyone is in agreement about what should be done. 

“So it was proposed both projects were done at the same time, but now it could be they don’t get done for years, if at all.

“I would urge councillors, whether county, district or town, to get behind these desperately-needed traffic calming measures so they actually go ahead.”
