One society has really struck a chord in Haslemere this year.
After a successful first six months, the Haslemere Town Training Band is gearing up for the new academic year, welcoming new players of all ages. Meeting every Wednesday evening, the band offers an opportunity for budding musicians to learn brass instruments and plays a key role in continuing Haslemere’s historic brass band tradition.
Historically, the training band has been an integral part of the Haslemere Town Band, one of the town’s oldest societies, dating back to 1837. Like many organisations, the programme was put on hold during the Covid-19 pandemic, but it made a triumphant return in January this year.
Led by experienced members of the Town Band, the training band offers a dedicated environment for learners, with a particular focus on school-age children. It provides a direct pathway into the main band for those eager to develop their musical skills.
Christopher Tibbs, former training band member and current co-chairman of Haslemere Town Band, said: “We are delighted to have been able to reintroduce the training band this year. Music and the Band have been a core part of Haslemere’s rich heritage and it is wonderful to see new faces carrying that on, especially in the younger generation.
“Learning to play a brass instrument teaches valuable life skills in a fun, encouraging environment, and can be an excellent way to make like-minded friends.”
